This moment highlights the bleak reality of their situation, where hope is not based on military superiority or logic, but on a fragile, desperate chance that defies reason. In the original novel, Gandalf adds, "as I have been told," referencing a previous conversation with Denethor, who dismissed the quest as a risk beyond all but a fool's hope.
